THE BATTLE OF MOSUL
The Battle Of Mosul was a military campaign launched by the Iraqi Government forces with allied militias, the Kurdish Regional Government, and international forces to retake the city of Mosul from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), which had taken control of the region in June 2014. The operation began on 16 October 2016 and was declared victorious by Iraqi Prime Minister, Haider al- Abadi, on 9 July 2017, despite ongoing fighting for the next month. Mosul was the last major ISIL stronghold within Iraq and was seen to be one of the most important victories over the terrorist group. It is estimated by the UNHCR that 823,260 Iraqi civilians are currently displaced from Mosul and surrounding areas with over $300 Billion needed in repairs.
